Lactation Consultants use counselling skills as well as a wide knowledge base to help breastfeeding mothers. In order to assess how a breastfeeding problem has occurred, it is important to take a history of labour, birth and the breastfeeding journey so far.

During your appointment I will look at the baby and assess him or her physically.
If you are having latching issues I may check inside the baby's mouth for clues as to why latching is problematic.

It may be important for me to look at the mother's breasts, but I do not normally need to touch the mother in order to help. I will always ask permission before touching either mum or baby.

I will observe a feed and I offer suggestions to overcome challenges. Together we will formulate a care plan to help you achieve your breastfeeding goals.

A thorough consultation will normally take 2 hours.
